Day 8: A place you've traveled to

August 4, 2017. I was very exhausted. Work demands, mental health issues, and relationship challenges have taken a toll on me. I flew out to the States hoping for a sweet escape, some rest, and time to write my blog. So upon arrival, I rushed to my accommodation, pulled up the shades and saw this Upper Manhattan view then suddenly, all my problems were forgotten. Well hello, New York City!

A few months back, my supervisor urged me to submit an abstract for a conference in New York. While I was glad that my abstract was accepted, every researcher knows that it takes months of rigorous laboratory work to pull off 15 slides worth of a scientific presentation. It was not a problem if working hard is the only thing that I had to do. Unfortunately, it was also during those months that my personal life has become a mess. Jay and I got into an almost endless bureaucracy that has already cost us five figures (in dollars) and innumerable stressful days and nights. I felt very helpless to see both of us falling apart in a country where we only have each other - no friends, no family. On so many nights, we talked about throwing the towel and cutting our losses. That we just pack our bags and go back home. That we stop forcing ourselves to fit into the very high standards of this country when he has a first world country to go back to anyway. No words can explain how painful it was for me because just barely a year ago, I was crying, wishing and praying on bended knees for this PhD and now I might have to give it all up.

The bureaucracy, work, and bills pushed us to the brink of our (my) sanity. I went to counseling and leaned on good people to seek encouragement and stay afloat. With their help, I managed to show up to work, albeit looking very tired and disheveled, and gave my best as if my personal issues did not affect my ability to be a scientist. I pushed my stressed mind to publish. To write and revise manuscripts. I worked tirelessly on the biggest academic hurdle of my PhD. Two days prior to my New York trip, an academic panel was still grilling me with questions as they decided on whether to confirm or reject me into the PhD program of The University of Queensland. I passed. I gathered my documents, packed my bags and flew to face another challenge that awaited me at the other side of the world.

Columbia University, August 2017.

It is no secret that my lifelong dreams are deeply aligned with educational achievements. My parents may not have afforded to send me to an Ivy League institution and I'm fine with that but I will still pass this dream to my future kids and to their kids until someone in the family finally gets an Ivy League degree. Haha. So imagine my happiness when I got the opportunity to present my work at Columbia University, no less.

My presentation was bombarded with so many questions that, even the audience thought, were harsh for a one-year-old research. But you know, they could have grilled me for one day and I wouldn’t care less. Never in my three years in research have I been that calm, collected and spontaneous in speaking about my work. Never have I had people approaching me, asking more about my work, offering collaborations, and requesting copies of my presentation.

Later at the gala dinner, I was sipping my champagne and looking at the Manhattan skyline aboard the Liberty Belle when a woman walked towards me. She said smiling, “I just want you to know that you did a great job in your presentation. I thought they were tough, but you were tougher."

And that’s how I will remember my New York trip. Frank Sinatra was not lying when he said, “If I can make it here, I’ll make it anywhere” because that was how New York made me feel. In the midst of nagging thoughts, regrets, homesickness and life questions, this glorious city celebrated my efforts for what it's worth, gave me a tap on the back, reminded me why I am still here thriving, and assured me that I will make it. So thank you, NYC. I really needed that.

Quick Post!

Hello from the dead! I know I haven't been blogging decently for ages already. I just started working (first job!) last February hence the big adjustment. Plus, my life is shifting to directions that I am finding hard to control. Hay, growing up. Y u so hard.

Anyway, just some pics to keep this updated.

Eric, Bij, Yna and Carlo. Super clingy friends! Been hanging out with them a lot since January!

Welcome to the Catholic world, Seph! Haha.

Spent the Maundy Thursday watching movies at Vin's place. Happy Holy Week from us. Haha.

Some girl bonding over their summer break. Happy graduation, Deb!

Yep that's it. My life's pretty boring and uneventful lately. Maybe because I'm still adjusting? Or I just don't want to try something new? Haha. Damn it. Laters, bye!

Metamorphosis

I am someone who frequently looks back on past photos and old memories. It makes me feel better to go back when things are familiar and safe; like past is a comfort zone. But I gotta let it go. Whatever familiarity the past could bring, I finally realized that things will never ever be the same as what it used to be.

Ahh, change. I have a love- hate relationship with change. I hate that it could happen so fast when it doesn't have to and when you're desperately wishing for it, you almost do not feel its arrival.

If there's one thing that I have gotten out of the film One Day, it's the sad thought of how time could outrun all of us. Even our relationship with the people we dearly love could never survive time and the change that comes with it. And if we could ever, luckily, catch up and make up for the lost time, what's left for us is never enough.

Sweat Like a Pig to Look Like a Fox

Ladies and gents, this was my 52kg body last December 2012. May we all take a moment of silence and ponder on it.. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Yes, a fatty on the picture. Now can you please give me a round of applause for my confidence to wear a swimsuit with a body like that? Yes? Thanks.

Now this is my 45kg body half a year later. It's not much, but I'm just SO happy to see visible results! It's such a milestone for me that I have to blog it. Haha.

I started working out 3weeks before my graduation. My graduation dress was a white, fitting tube so I had to be slim for it!  It was a bit of a crash diet for me because I tried to avoid food as much as I can and I was working out everyday, because duh I only got 3weeks to fit on that dress. I weighed 48.5kg at day 0 and by the day that I finally have to wear the dress, I was weighing 47kg.

BUT, cos there's always a but, a week after grad I started to binge! I figured that crash diet isn't gonna work for me so I changed my lifestyle. I am proud to say that I now live a healthy lifestyle. I eat small meals six times a day. I eat anything except junk foods, chocolate and fast foods. I also avoid soft drinks, powdered juice, bottled juice and all other processed drinks. I'm still doing cardio workouts at least two times a week for one hour, and 15-minute workout for my future abs. LOL.

I know, sticking to the diet is HARD. Now that I'm reviewing for the board exam my schedule became pretty hectic and studying is sucking the marrow out of me. I think working out is just like studying after all. They both need discipline, commitment and stick-to-it attitude. And they are both very rewarding in the end.

I started seeing diet as a marathon, not a sprint. Because it's not how fast I lose weight (and gain it back again), but how long could I stick to it.

I still haven't stopped my marathon for a healthy body -- and I pray that I don't have to stop it at all. It feels good to look and feel healthy inside out. It's not about being skinny but being fit. I always say this to my friends: as we get old our metabolism slows down that's why most of our parents can't get away with their flabs. They can't exercise that much too because of aging. Therefore we have our whole adulthood to spend with our fat body, so how about we enjoy our 20's being fit? ;)

My Longest Encounter with the Sun

That is me with an I-beg-you-please-extend-my-vacation face. Why do vacations seem to be more fun when its almost over? Le sigh.

We Are Young.

Aaaah... Thesis.  After three sems and a summer of sticking with century egg and polyaniline,  it's now defense time. Went good and smooth baby. I felt satisfied with it.

Ever since I was a kid, it's always a dream for me to put on those dangerous skating shoes and glide on ice like a pro. So thanks to my buddy, Vaughn, I experienced ice skating already! Haha. Now I know that it really takes a lot of blisters to be good in this sport. God, my butt still hurts right now. But really, I want to try it again :-)

Five dudes and a girl + One night + One place. = Fun + security guard telling us to stop singing, shut up and sleep.

Photo of the Day: Christmas '07

Vanessa was just six and I was just sixteen. Back in the time when that polka dress of my sister still fits her body, and back when I was still slim and zit-free. Gah I can't believe my skin looked that good on pictures! Oh, those were good times. Unfortunately (or rather fortunately) our camera is broken so we can't take a Christmas '09 photo for you guys to see how much I've changed -- my zits are rather shy you know. Haha!  Merry Christmas everyone! :)

P.S. This goes to the unfortunate side of not having a decent camera around: I can't show you how beautiful my HP book collection looks like now that I've finally completed the whole set! Yeah baby! Seven books right in my shelf! Awesome!

Paskuhan '09

Wow. It was one heck of a night.

Last December 18, 2009 UST celebrated it's annual campus-wide celebration, the Paskuhan. This year's Paskuhan marked the start of the official countdown to the quadricentennial celebration. As the clock ticked to 8pm that night, it was 4hours and 400 days before our school's 400th year -- then all the glistening christmas lights went on and the party began!

1. Star-studded night.
Archie Alemanya, Miriam Quiambao, JC Quadrado, Jamie Rivera, Rj Jimenez, Kuya Kim Atienza, Polo Ravales, and other famous UST alumni made an appearance that night. Actually we were hoping to death that Piolo Pascual would come too. But he didn't. Maybe in 2011 :P :P

2. The program
was so enjoyable! It was like watching ASAP. Haha, you know, performance-filled and all that. Dang, a band of seminaritas performed I got a feeling, by B.E.P. and their vocalist was cuuuuuuute! Even Miriam Quiambao noticed it.
A man from the top of the main building rappelled to the field, signaling the beginning of the night

3. Fireworks and confetti
"Tapos na ang quatro oras.. simula na ng quatro dias", said Kuya Kim when the clock ticked to 12:00 midnight.  A ten-minute magnificent fireworks display shot up to the sky, accompanied by colorful confetti and christmas carols , that made us all open-mouthed with stiff necks. It was breathtakingly awesome.

4. It totally rocked out.
6 cycle mind and Sandwich were the guest bands of the night. When 6Cycle was about to finish we pushed our way to the front to get a good look of Sandwich and Mong Alcaraz. (Dammit, I never thought I'd enjoy singing with 6CycleMind and the rest of the crowd while waiting for Sandwich.) The crowd was good. We were singing and jumping (I was wearing heels for crying out loud) the whole performance. Sandwich ended the night ohsofine!

5. Great company
UST did everything to make Paskuhan a very enjoyable and unforgettable night to everyone. I believe it's up to the students to enjoy it or not. And as for me and the snakeys, we made sure to enjoy and savor every minute of it. Thank you, friends for making my Paskuhan such a blast. :)

Thank you UST for a very grand and magnificent Christmas celebration! I seriously can't imagine how beautiful the 2011 Paskuhan will be. Merry Christmas!

Summer Kind of Wonderful

Ghel's family invited Jei and I for an overnight stay in La Virginia Resort in Lipa, Batangas last week. I was really skeptical if my parents will allow me there. I guess they considered the fact that I'm not just going with some friends, but with Ghel's family too so they allowed me. It was my first overnight plus out-of-town swimming experience. As in first! Haha.

The place is really beautiful!!! We spent more time taking pictures with the scenery rather than swimming. Haha. Look at our pictures, parang napilitan lang kami magswimming. Haha.

Then we went to Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club (Tita Gina's officemate toured us there) which is really classy and beautiful! Orchard, panis!! Haha. Ganda talaga. Then Tita's officemate took us in their Casa de Segunda. The moment we saw the ancient house, I was just kidding when I said that we're off for an educational trip, but it turned out that I was true. The house was the house of Segunda Katigbak, Rizal's first love. Shocking, right.

I am so proud of my shots. They are really m-shots! Haha. Ghel and Jei had trouble choosing what pictures to upload in their Facebook and Friendster accounts, coz you know, my shots are really beautiful. Hahaha. Kidding.

Lezz do thiz again! ;)

EIGHTEEN

You know, I never knew what's exciting about turning 18. I didn't understand why my schoolmates and friends are so stoked about their debut and their 18th birthdays, coz few weeks ago, I wasn't. Few months ago, my parents asked me if I'd like to have a debut celebration and I fervently said NO. I find it useless. I don't even understand what's special about the 18th birthday of a girl. I mean, what's the difference if you turn 17 or 18?? You'll turn a year older anyway.

So, yesterday, February 17,2009, I woke up with nothing on my mind. I just told myself, "hey I'm eighteen!", then I'm off to my usual routines. Didn't even do something special about my hair! What a debutante. I said my morning and birthday prayer, then I was good to go.

I was shocked the moment I arrived at school! My friends gave me gifts! Books. Jhuli gave me a blouse. Grabe! I reckon I told them "thanks" for about twenty times that morning. Umeffort naman sila. Salamat! But the most shocking part was when I was about to go home. We were at the hardrock when they told me to sit, then they fell in line. I didn't know what was that about until they started giving me chocolates! WAHHH! Ang dami talaga! Isang plastic! It was F who planned all of it. I remember telling him ages ago that I'm addicted to chocolates. I really thanked him bigtime! I never remembered going home happier than I was yesterday. I didn't even expected to be happier that day.

But I did!!

My best friends came over to complete my birthday!!! Debbie, Eric, Ghel with Tito and Tita, Bab, Juhiro, Nina and Abby came! I wasn't even expecting all of them to come, especially Eric! He told me that he can't come because he was really dizzy due to lack of sleep. DANG!! I was shocked when I found him standing on our doorstep! I love you hever!!

It was really one of the best nights of my life. I couldn't even recall when was the last time that all of us were together, eating, laughing as hard as we can, and talking about anything under the sun. I miss the way I talk, the way I laugh, and the way I am myself whenever I am with them. I couldn't be like that whenever I'm with the others.

I feel loved, I feel valued and I feel very appreciated yesterday.God only knows that I am under a tough situation these past few weeks, and I was almost close to blogging about how I feel about being "nobody". But last night, it made all the difference in me. I realized God has blessed me with a wonderful family, wonderful friends and a blessed life! Not everyone can have friends as wonderful as mine. Not everyone can come at the dead of the night just for a friend's birthday, and my hevers are one of the few who would gladly do that.

There were no fancy dresses, no catering services, no gowns, and no celebrations on the day I turned to be a lady. But given the chance to choose between a grand celebration and another day with my beloved ones, I'd gladly choose the latter in a heartbeat. I had the best 18th birthday celebration that I dreamed of!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Paskuhan '08

UNEXPECTED. A BLAST.

I wasn't really planning to go to Paskuhan since I know that my parents won't allow me anyway. But then, on the day of the celebration, my classmates urged me to ask permission. Try lang naman daw. So I texted my mom. I was surprised that she allowed me. By 12pm, I went home to rest, drop my things then change clothes. Another problem came up. My daddy told me that if I'm not gonna be home by 12am, he won't allow me to go. What the. Ghel was scheduled to be picked up by 12am. How am I supposed to be home by 12am too? Argh. I almost lost hope that time. :'( I forwared Tita Gina's text, assuring my parents not to worry and all that, to him. And you know what? Pinayagan ako!! Waaaaaah. Once in a lifetime to.

I left home by 5pm. While I was stuck in traffic in Morayta, I heard when the fireworks started and ended. Waaa. :'( The fireworks display was just short. 10minutes? Unlike last year when the display lasted for 30 minutes. Ang mahal!

Some kwentos:
  • Super daming tao! Paskuhan is really a famous celebration. It's like the Christmas Party of the whole UST community, and even for the outsiders.
  • I saw Carlo, with Tin, and Joshua.
  • Daming cute boys! Taga UST ba sila??
  • Globe network is at its busiest during Paskuhan. I received 7-pm-sent messages by 11pm. Four hours late. Tsk. It's even hard to send messages. I can't even call.
  • UST looked better last Paskuhan. The lights were better last year. But the Paskuhan this year is so much better!
  • The Christmas tree is so so so pretty. :)

  • Free foooooods!
  • Snakersss were complete that night. Yihee.
  • The bands who rocked the night: Charcoal gray (I dunno this one), Join the Club(damn, wag na sila mag-live!, and BAMBOO(the best!!!!)

Grabe talaga si Bamboo! That was the first time I've watched him L-I-V-E. Ira Cruz is very handsome, Bamboo is very cool, and the drummer is so brilliant. They are really one of a kind!
A lot of bands perform differently when live and usually iba na ang boses ng vocalist kasi ineedit naman lagi pag nasa cd, pero iba yung Bamboo!!! Grabe! Kung ano ung boses ni Bamboo sa cd, ganon din pag live! And yung tugtugan, grabe ang galing nila talaga! And you know what's the best part? They even performed Rivermaya songs! 214, Elisi, and Awit ng Kabataan. Galing! They performed more or less 10 songs. One thing's for sure, super mahal nun. And I don't want to estimate how much that had costed us. Tuition namin yun e. Hehehe. Pero super sulit naman talaga! Bamboo forever na. ♥

Buti nalang nakapunta ako. :)

I met Tita Gina at 11:20, and ofcourse, Ghel was 40 minutes late. Tsk.

Though our quiz2 in Physics was devastating ='(, I will forget that for a while. It's time to party! Hehe. Happy Holidays. :)

P.S. Deeeb I'm so sorry talaga. I feel so guilty e. Kaso Paskuhan is just once a year, and it's only once in a lifetime that I could be allowed in such gatherings. Enjoy yer vacation in Macau :)
